In 2011, Angela was diagnosed with a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor. GIST is a rare type of cancer that originates in the connective tissues of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. She had surgery at Roswell Park to remove the tumor, and began a targeted chemo treatment. She used her experience as a teaching moment about cancer for her students in the future.
